Arx Fatalis is set on a world whose sun has failed, forcing the above-ground creatures to take refuge in subterranean caverns. The action in Arx takes place in one of these large caves, where inhabitants from all races such as Trolls, Goblins, Dwarves, Humans, etc. have made their homes on various levels of the cave. The player awakes inside a prison cell and, after making his escape, eventually discovers his mission is to subvert and destroy the Lord of Destruction, Akbaa, who has been set loose in Arx.
GameplayArx Fatalis has a fairly open-ended gameplay style, allowing the player to allocate skill points for their character type such as spellcasting, weapons and armor, stealth, and so on. There are several side quests that can be undertaken, involving key finding and puzzle solving. The main plot line is fairly linear with the player collecting the various items required to defeat Akbaa in a final showdown.

In Arxon, you move a colored scarab along the edges of a grid filled with beetles of different colors. When you click your mouse, it pushes the scarab onto the board and moves all of the other beetles along that row or column one square. Arxon features three entertaining game modes. In Adventure Mode, you must create matches of three or more scarabs of the same color before the timer runs out.
The gameplay is the same in Endless Mode except there's no time limit. In Logic Mode, you must match the colored beetles to a pattern on the game board. Creating combos generates powerups, such as the Destroyer Bug, which wipes out all of the scarabs on the grid with the same color as the one you hit. Made men are the only ones who can rise through the ranks of Cosa Nostra, from soldier, to Captain (or Caporegime (Capo) as it is sometimes called), to Consigliere, Underboss, and finally Boss.

Max Payne 2 has a more "arcade" feel to it than the original game did, with the general play balance being closer to standard FPS games. Max is much tougher, and can now survive more than a dozen shots before dying. Conversely, Max's enemies are now a bit weaker, no longer able to survive as much damage as they could in the original game. Combined with the game's regenerating bullet-time, the overall level of difficulty is much less than in Max Payne. The change in difficulty may have been because the developer chose to focus more on the console market rather than just the PC. Shooters are considered more difficult on consoles because of the control scheme; it's much more difficult to aim precisely with an analogue joystick than with a mouse, and also consoles often do not support arbitrary saving and loading. In the case of Max Payne 2, the PC, Xbox and PlayStation 2 versions support arbitrary saving and loading. Another significant reason for the easier, arcade, feel in MP2 is the difficulty level, which is set at the easiest when you start the game. You can only alter the difficulty after completing the game (or with cheats).

The game world of Just Cause is entirely free-roam. This sandbox-type of game allows for complete freedom of choice as far as transportation, armament, and movement is concerned. Despite basic similarity to other games in the genre, Just Cause adds the unique ability to perform stunts using a number of gadgets such as grappling hooks, paragliders, and parachutes. This equipment allows the player to leap from car to car or grapple onto a moving vehicle and glide behind it. Liberating settlements is also a key feature of the gameplay. The player is tasked with overthrowing the local rule, whether it be the government or a rival drug cartel. Doing so gains the respect points within their faction.
